"Education for all-round development"
In recent years, education in China has achieved tremendous development and the education for all-round development’s development plan has also achieved some of its desired purposes. Especially since China’s reforms, the Chinese economy and employment opportunities have been improving with each day. All these improvements have laid a stable foundation towards an all-round education in China. However, the current situation still remains pessimistic, as the level of illiteracy remains high and education methods remain backward. We also lack talents, especially with some of them opting to venture overseas. These questions are indeed what we have to settle if we truly want to pursue the education for all-round development.
So, education for all-round development is now as a hot issue in our life. Many people are talking about whether this kind of system is good or not.
Different people have different definition of it, so before we begin, we should define what education for all-round development actually is… Basically, the education for all-round development’s purpose is to respect the independence and pro-activeness of students, pay attention to the development of students' intellectual potential and emphasize on all-round development of students. Based on these concepts, this kind of system has its both advantages and disadvantages…
There are some distinct advantages in our education system:
A. the systemization of studying and mastering knowledge
The most remarkable feature of our education system is that we are extremely strong in theory, for we have always been learning knowledge from class and textbooks. This makes us spend less time during the study, and gain the rich and complete specific knowledge directly. We just follow the path traversed by our predecessors, and master more theoretical knowledge. Therefore, we can do better in our practice by means of direction in theory.
B. developing in potential ability of students’ Brain
Under this education system, students can extend their edge of knowledge and develop their capability of brain. The majority of Chinese students study for hours on end. They are very used to going through hard times, as this prepares them for the rough work world in the future.
C. holding well-knit elementary knowledge and basic skills
Teachers teach conscientious, and students study hard because of the pressure come from the highly-competitive society. Strict management and almost cruel basic knowledge training has made the level of basic knowledge of Chinese students as a world leader. Chinese students hold stronger competition advantages than the others all over the world.
D. education for all-around development in processing
We, senior high school students, are now under a new course reformation. In spite of the so-called exam-oriented education, the New Course Reformation has put more attentions to students’ social skills, creativities, and the ability to complete tasks (of whatever students like) all by themselves. These will be recorded in students’ records and will be highly considered when entering a higher school.
We also have the chance to research a task. We do not have this opportunity before. It is a great step to carry on education for all-around development. It has been proved to be very successful in the U.S. and other developed countries. Though we are a lot later than them, but finally it came to reality.
What’s more, it is about the imagination.
Deep remember, in a class, when my teacher asked what we thought the moon looked like. My friend said: it was just like the banana he often eats. Our teacher didn’t agree and told him that the moon won’t be like a banana. My friend said that it could be like a banana. But our teacher was getting angry and began to shout: I said it wasn’t like and it wasn’t going to be like! My friend face turned red, and he didn’t know what to say. He lowered his head sadly and sat down quietly.
Did our teacher really doesn’t want us to have a creative imagination? Or did our teacher really want to be angry with him? If you ask me, I would surely say: No! None of the teachers want their students become dull and machine like. None of the teachers want their students think them strict and harsh. So I just think of the education they had. Most of the teachers at that time just parroted anything written on books. And they were much stricter than now. So maybe, students at that time became more and more parrot-like. I don’t mean all of them, but most. Most of them, after stayed in this atmosphere, would mostly close their hearts to outside, close their creative imagination, their fantastic ideas. So then, when they began to teach us, they even couldn’t stand of our imagination. They would think it was kind of absurd and unreasonable. Then what about our future? Becoming another copy of our teachers and their teachers? What’s a terrible vicious circle! I really don’t dare to image it.
Yes, there is another thing, I think, I have to say. At the beginning of every new text learning, our teacher would keep on telling us to remember the “standard-answers”, to remember the “author’s idea” of the article. In each of a reading test, our teacher would tell us to constantly how to answer and tell us continuously: remember, for open trail, we must be thinking positive.
I am always thinking, why we must study those subjects at school? Maybe you will tell me: it is to get knowledge. But personally, I think the more important reason is to have high quality. We’re going to face more and more things which we can’t even image now. It will be impossible for us to solve everything with the knowledge we have already know. So, what we do now is to make ourselves have comprehensive ability to solve the problem we would have; what we do now is to make ourselves brave and steady when we are in some troubles. So, look back, now think, what’s the standard answer for? Maybe this time you would say that it is for the exams. But, are we learning just for examinations? Is Chinese education is just the warm-up before the examination? We should not forget that our education is just for all-round development but not the “exam-orientated education”. And the gist is the creative capability and character quality. However, if we just remember the “standard” answers, remember the “author’s idea”, if we just write what the examiner want us to write, write the so-called positive answer, it will be a kind of parrot-cry when we talk about our “own idea”, because in the nearly 15 years studying, we are told to think in the same way. And where are the “creative capability” and the “character quality”? We can’t even have our own way to look upon the things happened around us.
]Although the Education for all around development was advocated in china , variety and creativity education are also lack due to the exit of test oriented education .For a example , somebody is good at music and computer , but always fail in the main course, teachers will consider that he is a un-assiduous student.
According a real case of Wang Nan to analyze: Wang Nan is a student who likes to make jokes, but never hardworking at all. Despite his classmates think that he is really smart and also get on well with them, however, the teacher still notice him because of making trouble.
Wang Nan said the shortcoming like making joke, loving the plying wouldn’t not only be criticized here but also could be encouraged. Moreover, in China, his teachers didn’t care about whether he can play music instruments, but in America, while the teachers knew that he can play music instrument, they asked Wang Nan to join the school band to develop the violin skills .Gradually, he has a self-esteem, his courses are better and better, and Now becomes one of the best students.
According to the two examples, we could find the problem easily that:
Education for all-round development can’t only pay attention to the text books, it needs to have a complete projects to be suitable for everyone. There are too many students in every classes, the teacher should manage to develop potential of every student respectively.
Teachers always consider that the students who get poor grades for many times is not a good students definitely, although they are really talented in other subjects. This would lose a great deal of chance to bring up the students with various abilities.
In conclusion, our country is trying to develop this education system. All the parents want their children to grow well and become a great person. We also have the strong willing to contribute for the society. So it’s suitable for us to learn more subjects and be creative. We should also carry on the benefits of the education system, and make it better. For the advices, I think the most important thing is that we have to realize the situation. Here are the suggestions:
First of all, we should treat the examinations in a correct way. Examination results can be one of the evidence, but it’s not the only evaluation to judge a student. The aim of the exam can be changed as the test of the skills in the reality not only the memory. Some companies can provide us some questions which dealing with the real problems.
Secondly, teachers should improve their own quality in order to adapt the new education system. As a student, we should think independently and be more creatively. Don’t always follow others or only know the normal way to the question. Just be unique! Also try to reduce pressure by self.
Thirdly, the public ought to realize that we can’t comment students only from the result of the exam. Pay attention to the contents and process of education would be more justice.
After everyone putting their effort improving our education system, I believe it’ll become better and better! |
